The rate of high blood pressure among Black adults in the United States is among the highest in the world.
About 58% of Black adults have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Black adults also have higher rates of more severe high blood pressure than other racial or ethnic groups, and it can develop earlier in life.
Black adults have higher rates of more severe high blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to other conditions and is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.
There is a lower rate of taking blood pressure medications among Black adults, partly due to lack of access to those medications and a distrust of health care.
