Part of the revolutionary impact of AI comes from its ability to empower different kinds of businesses to tailor transformational tools for their specific needs. For example, local, on-device AI can unlock new opportunities for efficiency and innovation for companies that need levels of data security, privacy, latency, offline functionality, or customization that cloud-based applications can’t provide. While the potential benefits of on-device AI may be clear, knowing where to start is a different matter. An important first step is the decision to outfit your team with computers designed for on-device AI—those that contain neural processing units (NPUs) that accelerate AI tasks.

New AI-integrated notebooks—such as the HP EliteBook 8 G1a 14 inch Notebook Next Gen AI PC—include NPUs, GPUs, and CPUs designed for both AI-oriented and traditional resource-intensive tasks. To provide potential buyers with objective AI PC performance data, we used a range of industry-standard benchmarks to compare the AI and office productivity performance of three systems: an HP EliteBook 8 G1a powered by an AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 processor, a Dell Pro 14 Plus laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 7 268V processor, and a Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 7 268V processor. We also conducted thermal and battery life testing to see if mobile workers could use each system comfortably while they knock out a full day of heavy workloads.

In our tests, the AMD-powered EliteBook 8 G1a achieved higher NPU and CPU performance scores compared to the Intel-powered Dell Pro 14 Plus and Lenovo ThinkPad T14s—including a 57 percent advantage in one on-device AI test and a 47 percent win in one 3D-rendering workload. And the EliteBook stayed comfortably cool and provided more than a full workday’s worth of battery life under load. Those performance and usability benefits can translate to more productive days for busy professionals tackling demanding workloads on the go.
