Fast-paced professionals, engineers and technicians in the field, and multimedia content creators may rely on small form factor or mobile workstation computers for several reasons—including the need to free up physical space, maintain a cool and quiet work environment, minimize power consumption, or support easy portability. When it’s time for them to shop for new digital workhorses to power their productivity into the future, a need for compact or mobile hardware does not have to translate to settling for lower performance. New HP G1a workstations—powered by AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO processors—may provide the computing muscle to handle demanding workloads like AI while still delivering the practical benefits of smaller, lighter hardware.

We used a range of industry-standard benchmarks to compare the AI-focused, graphics-intensive, and productivity performance of an HP Z2 Mini G1a small form factor workstation and an HP ZBook Ultra G1a mobile workstation to two sets of Apple workstations. In the first set, we compared an HP Z2 Mini G1a with a Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 processor to an Apple Mac mini and Apple Mac Studio equipped with Apple M4 Pro and M2 Ultra processors, respectively. In the second set, we compared two configurations of a 14-inch HP ZBook Ultra G1a—one with a Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 and one with an AI Max PRO 390—to a 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro powered by an Apple M4 Pro.

In the desktop workstation comparison, we found that across the board, the AMD-powered HP Z2 Mini G1a workstation delivered superior benchmark scores to both the Apple Mac mini and Mac Studio systems we tested. In the mobile workstation comparison, both configurations of the AMD-powered ZBook Ultra G1a demonstrated clear advantages over the Apple MacBook Pro—delivering up to 67 percent higher general productivity performance, up to 60 percent better graphics performance, up to 26 times stronger AI inference performance, and up to 43 percent faster rendering performance.

Our findings suggest that AMD Ryzen-powered HP Z2 Mini G1a and ZBook Ultra G1a workstations can provide modern professionals with strong performance in a variety of resource-intensive tasks—including AI and graphics workloads—while also providing the flexibility they need to excel wherever their work takes them.
