Remote work is here to stay, and organizations are trying multiple approaches to support their staff. One key method involves providing Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) for users. VDI uses virtualization to bring essential resources to their workers, and it allowed many workers to continue working when the global pandemic created the larger remote workforce that persists to this day. Finding VDI technology that helps IT admins scale VDI desktops and apps quickly and enables users to access their resources in less time could be a key edge for any organization.

We tested the VDI performance of a VMware Horizon 8 VDI environment using VMware App Volumes 4 versus one with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 using Citrix App Layering. In our tests, VMware Horizon 8 took less time to scale non-persistent VDI sessions, and VMware App Volumes deployed apps to desktops more easily than Citrix. Moreover, the VMware solution had faster logins and potentially better app performance.
