Heart Transplant

A heart transplant replaces a failing heart with a healthy donor heart. Heart failure symptoms can get much better or even disappear. Heart transplant as a treatment option presents its own issues.

For example, heart transplant patients have to take medication every day to stop the body from rejecting the new heart. Side effects of these medications include diabetes, kidney disease, and high blood pressure. Heart transplant patients are also at higher risk for infection and cancer.
