Recognizing Emotions After a Diagnosis of Heart Failure

Everyone feels blue sometimes. But, when these feelings do not go away, they can interfere with sleep, appetite, and energy level. Explore the symptoms you should recognize as potential risks to your overall health.

Depression

Although fatigue and loss of appetite are common symptoms of heart failure, they are more likely due to depression if you are also feeling any of the following symptoms for more than two weeks:

Common symptoms of depression include:

  • Down mood
  • Feeling blue
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Withdrawal from others
  • Excessive sleepiness

Other common symptoms of depression include:

  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Hopelessness
  • Suicidal feelings
  • Preoccupation with death
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Loss of appetite

Anxiety

Symptoms of anxiety are normal reactions to stressful situations but pose risks to your overall health when they linger too long. Watch for symptoms that persist for more than two weeks as they may be warning signs of anxiety.
