Data-driven applications have revolutionized the world around us, from the smallest details of daily life to long-term strategies for global industries. Now, AI is supercharging the big data revolution, and businesses of all sizes are looking for ways that AI can help unleash their data’s potential.

Among the many transformational AI technologies on the market, generative AI (GenAI) apps such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT stand out for being user-friendly and for their ability to process diverse types of data and create innovative content. While public-facing GenAI apps tend to generate the most headlines, organizations can also use these tools on their private data. By training AI tools on internal data, businesses can potentially optimize existing workflows, create new products and services, and solve problems more efficiently. For many decision makers, it’s easy to imagine the possible benefits of introducing customized, AI-enabled applications to their workspace. What is often not easy is to know where and how to start.

Microsoft Azure offers a suite of cloud-based AI-ready tools and services—including Azure Cosmos DB, Azure OpenAI Service, and Azure AI Search—that can provide companies with a path to using GenAI with their own data. To investigate how Azure Cosmos DB and Azure AI Services could help support an organization’s AI goals, we researched how businesses in industries such as retail, manufacturing, healthcare, legal, and finance might use AI to leverage their data. To show how such businesses might move forward, we built a proof-of-concept AI chat application that illustrates how organizations might use Azure Cosmos DB for AI alongside existing operational or transactional systems.

We found that Azure Cosmos DB and Azure AI Services tools enabled a straightforward build and training process, even when we trained our proof-of-concept chat app on a large, customized dataset. While we chose to build an AI-powered chat app, the Azure tools we used can also support other types of intelligent AI apps, such as recommendation engines, AI assistants, or copilots. Our experience shows that for companies that want to bring the power of AI to their data, Azure Cosmos DB and the Azure AI Services ecosystem can be a good place to start.
