For many business and technical professionals, a typical workday often consists of trying to focus on a few core, high-value functions while simultaneously juggling dozens of other important—but distracting—routine duties. Emails, meeting summaries, message and document drafting, project tracking, and other related tasks can all be essential for a well-functioning enterprise. But those responsibilities can also be time sinks that prevent real progress on critical initiatives. In the daily tug-of-war between competing priorities, local AI-enhanced tools and applications can be real game changers. To explore the potential time savings and capacity-multiplying benefits that technical experts and power users could experience with local AI technologies, we tested two AI-powered PCs with AMD Ryzen processors: a new HP EliteBook X G2a system with an AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 450 and a 4-year-old HP EliteBook 865 G9 with an older Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U. We evaluated the performance of those systems using a series of scenarios across three approaches: using local AI technologies on the new AI PC, performing the same tasks manually on that same system, and completing them manually on the older laptop. Our testing focused on common tasks relevant to software developers, project managers, and other technical users, allowing us to compare performance differences across both hardware generations and workflow methods. By estimating the frequency with which the test tasks would occur in real-world settings, we were able to show the potential impact of performance differences on staff bandwidth and general work cycles.
Across the many tasks we tested, local AI technologies enabled massive reductions in completion times compared to traditional manual approaches—as much as 97 percent in one scenario. For the software development workflows, the AI advantage translated into a reduction in weekly time for the tasks we measured from an average of 24 hours and 6 minutes to an average of 6 hours and 13 minutes—a savings of over 18 work hours, or more than two typical workdays. For project management and other information-focused tasks, weekly time decreased from an average of 24 hours and 40 minutes to 4 hours and 45 minutes on average—a savings of almost 20 hours, nearly half a typical workweek! Our test results indicate that AI-capable PCs powered by AMD Ryzen processors can enable substantial gains in productivity, allowing busy professionals to shift large chunks of time to higher-value work.
