Now that Dell and AMD have partnered to bring the performance and on-device AI capabilities of AMD Ryzen AI PRO processors to Dell Pro AI PCs, many businesses will be interested in exploring the idea of integrating these new AI PCs with their existing fleets. For decision-makers looking at the pros and cons of buying a specific set of PCs for remote or hybrid work contexts, there are often many factors to consider beyond better productivity and user experience. System-level and fleetwide security and management features are often major priorities. IT teams with experience managing Intel vPro environments may be concerned about having to integrate AMD PRO platforms, but our hands-on tests in a Microsoft Intune management environment show that there is no need to worry about added complexity or a loss of key features.
In an in-depth study, we compared the experience of completing common IT device management tasks on three Copilot+ AI PC laptops: an AMD Ryzen PRO processor-powered Dell Pro 16, an Intel Core Ultra 7 268V with vPro processor-powered HP EliteBook 8 G1i, and an Intel Core Ultra 7 268V with vPro processor-powered Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6. On all three systems, we evaluated both out-of-band (OOB) and in-band management capabilities—along with the time and number of steps it took to complete certain software deployment and BIOS policy configuration tasks.
For OOB management of the AMD-powered Dell Pro 16, we used the AMD Management Console. For OOB management of the Intel-powered HP EliteBook 8 G1i and Lenovo T14 Gen 6, we used Intel Enterprise Manager Assistant and MeshCommander. For in-band management of all three laptops, we employed Microsoft Intune with Entra ID.
We found that the AMD Ryzen AI PRO processor-powered Dell Pro 16 was easy to manage, and the AMD platform delivered similar capabilities to the Intel vPro systems in the common management scenarios we tested. We also found that IT admins managing a fleet of AMD PRO processor-powered Dell devices could save significant time and effort compared to the Intel-powered HP or Lenovo systems, depending on the task.
Our results show that companies that consider equipping their workforce with new AI-capable Dell Pro laptops powered by AMD PRO do not need to worry about losing OOB or in-band management features or IT team efficiency. ]
