The big data revolution has kickstarted a cascade of innovation, paving the way for entirely new industries and transforming the ways that organizations gather, store, analyze, and extract value from the vast amounts of information they collect. Many businesses that fuel data-driven applications like real-time analytics and AI solutions with large amounts of diverse input have turned to the cloud-based, unified lakehouse approach of Databricks to help organize, manage, and leverage their data in an operationally efficient way. While Databricks integrations exist for multiple major cloud service providers (CSPs), variables like optimized storage solutions, high-performance computing resources, and low-latency networking can all affect how well Databricks performs with any given integration. To put themselves in the best position to reap the benefits of fast, robust data workflows in the future, organizations should consider the strengths of their CSP's Databricks integration.
We measured the Databricks decision support system (DSS) workload performance of two Databricks software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions: Azure Databricks, the only first-party Databricks service, and Databricks on AWS, a third-party service. We ran power (lone query) and throughput (concurrent queries) tests to see how each Databricks solution would handle single-user or multiple-user analytics scenarios.
In our tests, Azure Databricks processed DSS queries faster than Databricks on AWS, completing lone query streams in up to 21.1 percent less time and concurrent query streams in up to 9.4 percent less time. Both environments used the same Databricks solution but differed in underlying cloud infrastructure, integration, and support models. The level of time savings we saw in our tests could provide users with the capacity to accelerate their analytical workloads, improve operational efficiency, and make better-informed decisions faster. The first-party integration features of Azure Databricks may be a smart way to go for organizations looking for a high-performance integrated analytics solution.
