For the decision makers and technical professionals responsible for investing in and supporting enterprise PC fleets, it's critical to know how well particular devices will integrate with their multifaceted "defense in depth" security strategies. While proven best practices, organizational controls, and robust access and encryption software are all critical components of strong, proactive PC fleet protection, built-in, manufacturer-enabled features may ultimately tip the scales when choosing the most secure computers for your team. When it comes to specific security and related system management tools, there can be significant differences between the offerings from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The number of sophisticated threats to your company’s sensitive data is growing every day, so it’s important to understand the full extent of detection, prevention, and remediation features that you’ll get with your investment.
We researched publicly available marketing claims and documentation to find out the extent to which three Windows PC OEMs—Dell, HP, and Lenovo—supported eight key PC security and system management features. We focused our research on the features that each vendor supports within two general categories: 1) prevention, detection, and remediation; and 2) integrated hardware and software security solutions. In the first group, we investigated on-device and cloud-based signed factory manifests, BIOS verification and image capture capabilities, off-host firmware verification, attack detection, vulnerability detection and remediation, and user credential storage. In the second group, we examined below-the-OS telemetry integration.
Based on what we found in each OEM’s publicly available documentation, Dell supported all eight of the security and management features we investigated. HP partially supported three features, and Lenovo fully supported two. For companies that want to equip their workforce with capable, feature-rich desktops and laptops while feeling confident that their assets, networks, and infrastructure will be well-protected against an ever-evolving threat environment, Dell PCs may be a smart choice for their next fleet deployment.
