New device shopping tool helps consumers make smarter buying choices

Durham, NC—The Benchmark XPRT Development Community has launched a shopping tool that includes side-by-side comparisons of today’s leading devices. The tool is part of the XPRT Weekly Tech Spotlight’s Back to School Roundup, which highlights leading devices and helps families and students choose the right tools for their educational needs. The tool lets buyers compare all‑in‑one PCs, Chromebooks, convertibles, laptops, and tablets running Chrome OS, OS X, and Windows.

“Our new tool lets buyers make comparisons using results from the XPRT benchmarks,” said Bill Catchings, co-founder of Principled Technologies, Inc., which administers the BenchmarkXPRT Development Community. “Heading back to school often means tech purchases, so we launched the tool with our Back to School Roundup.”

Principled Technologies tests the devices in the Spotlight using the industry standard BenchmarkXPRT tools: WebXPRT, MobileXPRT, TouchXPRT, CrXPRT, BatteryXPRT, and HDXPRT. In addition to the benchmark results, the side-by-side comparisons include photographs, device specs, and prices.

The XPRT Weekly Tech Spotlight debuted February 16, making it easier for consumers to shop for a new laptop, smartphone, tablet, or PC. Recent devices in the spotlight include the Intel Skull Canyon NUC, LG Chromebase, Acer Aspire Z3-715, Dell Inspiron 24 3459, HP Chromebook 14, and Apple MacBook Air 11.  More devices come on line weekly; see the full list on the XPRT Weekly Tech Spotlight page.

Principled Technologies releases first video series, “Women Coding for Change”

DURHAM, NC–(Marketwired – July 07, 2016) – Principled Technologies (PT), which administers the BenchmarkXPRT Development Community, is releasing its first video series, “Women Coding for Change.” The series tells the stories of the XPRT Women Code-a-thon, which the BenchmarkXPRT Development Community co-hosted with ChickTech Seattle in March 2016. These videos shed light on the gender disparity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields and the growing problems that disparity is causing.

Though women hold the majority of professional jobs in the United States, they represent less than a quarter of software developers. Women are underrepresented in STEM fields from high school through college and into the professional world.

As the second Women Coding for Change video explains, the problem is enormous. By 2020, more than 1.4 million computing-related jobs will be open, and at current graduation rates, the U.S. will not be able to fill them. Training and hiring more women in STEM fields would help bridge that gap.

“The inequalities are staggering, not just in tech,” Jennie Faries said. “It’s getting better, but it is very slow.” Faries, a developer and designer, has had a career in technology for over twenty years and acted as a judge at the XPRT Women Code-a-thon. Faries works for PT, which administers the BenchmarkXPRT Development Community.

For PT, a technology company in the Research Triangle Park region, the issue is close to home.

“We need to recognize that this is a problem for us all: for men, for women, for technology companies, for the economy at large,” said Mark Van Name, co-founder of Principled Technologies. “When a more diverse group of people teams up to build or test products, the products will be better. If we don’t fix this problem, all of us lose.”

The series contains eight videos, which PT will release individually throughout the summer. The first — “Women Coding for Change: Trailer” — offers a sneak peek at the series, while “Women Coding for Change: The Problem” demonstrates the extent of the gender gap.

XPRT Women Code-a-Thon: Make your voice heard and win a cash prize

DURHAM, NC –(Marketwired – March 01, 2016) – The BenchmarkXPRT Development Community and ChickTech are co-hosting the XPRT Women Code-a-Thon on March 12-13 in Seattle. The code-a-thon encourages Seattle software programmers to create small apps, or “workloads,” that mimic actions they take on their devices every day.

The top three participants or teams will receive cash prizes of up to $2,500, and all participants’ workloads will be considered for inclusion in future versions of the BenchmarkXPRT tools, or XPRTs. Any programmer familiar with Web development or Android development is encouraged to participate.

The XPRTs are apps that empower people all over the world to test how well devices handle everyday activities. They do this by running workloads that simulate common tasks – just like the workloads code-a-thon participants will be building.

“We want the XPRTs to reflect how people actually use their technology every day,” said Jennie Faries. Faries is one of the code-a-thon’s judges and a developer at Principled Technologies, which administers the BenchmarkXPRT Development Community. “By gaining the perspectives of this group of women, we’re making the tools stronger and more realistic. And when the tools we use to measure technology get better, the technology itself gets better too.”

All participants will receive a t-shirt and locally sourced breakfast and lunch on both days of the code-a-thon. The event will include time for networking and conclude with a talk from a special keynote speaker.
