Principled Technologies is looking for candidates to fill the following positions in our Durham/RTP office.

  • Performance engineer

    We are seeking a full-time, hands-on performance engineer for a position in our Durham/RTP office. We are targeting an outside-the-box thinker who is passionate about excellence, someone who questions and verifies while communicating well and working well with teammates. The ideal candidate has:

    Technical skills

    • Excellent system performance and optimization skills in various technology areas (see below)
    • An understanding of and experience with networking, distributed systems, and various operating systems and hypervisors, plus the ways these technologies interact to deliver optimal performance in various configurations
    • 3-5 years of experience in and/or research on these technologies in a scientific, academic, service provider, or enterprise context
    • A conceptual foundation in computer science and computer systems
    • Fearless problem-solving skills, including the willingness and ability to tackle new technology issues quickly, on short timetables, and using thorough logic and detailed analysis

    Team and communication skills

    • The ability to clearly and regularly communicate progress and/or issues
    • The ability to articulate why the technologies we are highlighting matter and help translate difficult engineering topics into consumable deliverables (whitepapers, videos, infographics)
    • The ability to explain how technologies are configured on macro and micro levels
    • The ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines and the willingness to work long hours when necessary
    • Team spirit and the ability to work well in a collaborative environment of varying capabilities and personalities

    Key areas of expertise include the following. Our ideal candidate would have experience in all of these areas, but we’re open to people who have worked in many of them and would like to learn the others.

    • Server architecture subsystems (CPU, memory, disk, network), including how their interactions affect each other and the overall performance and execution characteristics of various vendor solutions
    • Mainstream operating systems (Linux, VMware, Microsoft)
    • Hardware and software virtualization technologies, such as VMware (e.g., vSphere), Hyper-V, KVM, containers
    • Networking experience on various hardware providers, such as Cisco Nexus and Dell Networking. Software defined networking skills (VMware NSX) are a bonus.
    • Dell EMC, HPE, Lenovo, and/or Cisco server and hardware technologies
    • Various storage technologies from multiple vendors: SAN, NAS, distributed storage (GFS and Ceph), software-defined storage
    • Evaluation of hardware and software scalability and performance
    • Relational database technologies, including Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and their associated benchmarking toolsets
    • Low-level benchmarking tests (e.g., CPU, storage, memory, network, etc.) and application-level benchmarking tests (e.g., VMmark, SPECvirt, SPECcloud)
    • Cloud technologies, both public (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure) and private (e.g., OpenStack, vCloud Suite)

    Bonus areas of experience

    • Linux, preferably on multiple distributions (Red Hat, CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu)
    • Non-relational database technologies, such as Hadoop-based data stores (e.g., HBase and Hive), MongoDB, Cassandra
    • Shell and/or PowerShell scripting.
    • Provisioning tools (Cobbler, etc.) and configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet, etc.)
    • Big data software solutions (e.g., Hadoop, Apache Spark)

    We have lofty goals: We want to produce the best work in the world. If you come onboard, you’ll be signing up for those goals, so you should want to produce work that is great, not just good enough.

    We will not relocate candidates for these openings, so you should live in the Triangle area or plan to move here soon.
