Dell’s 11th Generation PowerEdge Portfolio
Dell commissioned PT to conduct a series of tests of their 11th Generation PowerEdge servers vs. competing HP servers shipping at the time of the tests.
We compare the virtualized Microsoft Exchange 2007 workload performance of the servers. To do so, we used Microsoft Exchange LoadGen 2007, a Microsoft-provided tool for benchmarking an Exchange Mail Server. For virtualization, we used Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V.
We also compared virtualized online transaction processing (OLTP) performance of the servers. To do so, we used Microsoft SQL Server with the DVD Store Version 2 test tool, an open-source simulation of an online e-commerce DVD store, where customers log in, browse, and order products. For virtualization, we used Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V.
We then analyzed the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of three different competitive server sets in a group of white papers. For that analysis, we drew on the Exchange and OLTP testing to compare savings by rack, by chassis, and by blade (for the two sets of blade servers) and by rack and server (for the set of rack servers).
Finally, to study the manageability of the rack servers, we compared each server’s management solutions when performing the following tasks: initial system setup, firmware updates, diagnostics, and remote management setup.
