StorageNewiSCSI storage arrays: Email, database, and file service mixed performance We used the Iometer benchmarking tool to compare the performance of the Dell PowerVault MD3220i iSCSI SAN array and the older Dell PowerVault MD3000i iSCSI SAN array on a mixed workload.

NewiSCSI storage arrays: Email and database performance We used the Iometer benchmarking tool to compare the performance of the Dell PowerVault MD3220i iSCSI SAN array and the older Dell PowerVault MD3000i iSCSI SAN array running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and Microsoft SQL Server Decision Support Systems (DSS) workloads.

Dell PowerVault MD3000i high-availability testing on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V We tested whether the Dell™ PowerVault™ MD3000i iSCSI storage array in a high-availability configuration could support small (200-user) and medium (500-user) organizations running virtualized workloads while in both an optimized and degraded system state.

Dell EqualLogic PS4000XV performance with varying user counts running a combined database, email, and file server workload We determined how many users a Dell EqualLogic PS4000XV storage array can support for small- and medium-business activity involving multiple simultaneous common workloads.

iSCSI 10Gb Software Initiator performance analysisWe compare the CPU usage and throughput results of two sets of 10Gb iSCSI initiators in large and small block tests: those of a 10Gb Broadcom HBA vs. those of a 10Gb Intel Software Initiator with I/OAT enabled, and those of a 10Gb Broadcom iSCSI HBA vs. those of a 4Gb QLogic FC HBA.

iSCSI 1Gb Software Initiator performance analysis We compare the CPU usage and throughput results of software-based iSCSI initiators, TCP offload engines (TOE), and hardware-based adapters in large and small block tests on the 1Gb Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II GigE network card.

Storage: SSDs

StorageNewWe conducted a series of studies comparing two types of drives:

OLTP performance comparison: Solid-state drives vs. hard disk drives  To compare performance and power for online transaction processing (OLTP), we focused on a single scenario: a user needing additional server performance and wanting to know whether six SSDs installed in server drive slots would provide better performance and lower power consumption than a full external 24-disk enclosure of HDDs.

Windows Media Load Simulator performance comparison: Solid-state drives vs. hard disk drives To compare the performance and power when streaming Windows Media, we used the Windows Media Load Simulator, which tests a server’s ability to accommodate a large number of streaming connections from Microsoft’s Windows Media Server.

Photoshop CS4 performance comparison: Solid-state drives vs. hard disk drives To compare performance on visualization tasks, we used a custom test that included four tasks in Adobe Photoshop CS4: opening the Photoshop application, opening an image, rotating the image, and saving the modified image as a PSD file. We ran these tests in both single- and multi-tasking configurations.

Exchange performance comparison: Solid-state drives vs. hard disk drives To compare the performance and power for Microsoft Exchange 2007 storage, we used the Primary Storage performance tests from the Microsoft Exchange Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP) test framework. These tests employ the Microsoft Exchange Server Jetstress tool.
